Fashion Takes My Mom and I Actually Agree On

By Cate Hewitt | October 16, 2024

It’s a wonder my mom hasn’t disowned me for my past fashion choices. For context, she’s corporate and composed, polished and professional, always sporting the most elegant, elaborate looks to every occasion-including my elementary school basketball games. She refused to fall into the “mom uniform” of Lululemon leggings and athleisure. I, on the other hand, spent a far too large chunk of my childhood in tie-dye tops, aggressively hiked-up jean shorts, disgusting “white” Vans, and scrunchies.

But somehow, through all of that, she stuck with me. Now, as I’ve matured out of my “forever summer” wardrobe, I’ve noticed something younger me would find a little unsettling: our styles are becoming more and more similar. It started with me borrowing one of her classic cardigans, a look I never thought would make me feel as stylish as it did. Now, even though we are hours apart, I find myself viewing her mirror selfie “outfit checks” with newfound respect.

I’m not saying we now dress the same. But I will admit, we have found stylistic common ground this season-proof that her fashion wisdom might have been rubbing off on me all along.

1. Brown might just be the New Black

While my mom is still holding tight to her beloved black wardrobe staples of blazers, pants and dresses, even she can’t deny that brown is putting up a serious fight this fall. Whether it’s a rich chocolate trench coat or a pair of sleek tan calf-high boots, brown has emerged as a go-to neutral this season. It’s warm and elegant, and adds a subtle richness to outfits without feeling like it’s trying too hard. We haven’t abandoned black entirely-we will never abandon black-but brown is definitely having its moment in both of our closets.

2. Kitten Heels: A (Late) Appreciation

Kitten heels have been my mom’s go-to for years, perfectly appropriate for her corporate power-player lifestyle. I, on the other hand, used to think they were the fashion equivalent of not committing-too short to be sexy, too tall to be practical. But I’ve matured since then. I’ve come to appreciate the magical balance of style and comfort that kitten heels provide. Whether I’m running errands, heading to class, or dressing up for a night out, they’re the perfect choice. They taught me that I don’t need to suffer to slay.

3. Cool Jackets for Cool(er) Weather

I may live in LA, but that doesn’t stop me from indulging in the fantasy of fall jackets. My mom has always loved a well-tailored trench or blazer, while I’ve been more interested in cropped, boxy, or fur-lined cuts. This fall we met in the middle and are both obsessing over jackets in all shapes and sizes. Patched denim, vintage wool, bomber jackets-you name it. There is no generational debate about throwing on a great jacket that makes one feel instantly pulled together, even if it’s still 70 degrees outside. Here’s to hoping we get that crisp fall air soon, so our jacket collections can shine.

4. Maximalist/Statement Jewelry

If there’s one thing my mom and I have always agreed on, it’s the power of jewelry. But not just any jewelry-bold, eye-catching statement jewelry. While my mom is partial to timeless pearls or gold pieces, I like to experiment with cool stacks of bracelets or chunky rings. Yet, we both agree that jewelry is meant to be fun and should never be an afterthought. This fall, we’re all about letting our jewelry do the talking. Whether it’s a funky necklace or a collection of bracelets that jingle with every move, we love making a statement. Like a personal ringtone, your accessories are your look AND your sound.

In Conclusion: Demure Fall is Here

So, while we may not agree on everything, my mom and I have officially found our fashion sweet spot this fall. We may come at it from different angles, but we’re both embracing a more elegant style with a hint of playfulness.
