New Season, New Drops: Checking Up On Geistwear
By Jamie Gelman and Rachel Becker | October 21, 2023
Almost exactly a year ago, SPEC did a deep dive into USC student entrepreneurs Ocean Ronquillo-Morgan and Clarence Diogo’s streetwear apparel company, Geistwear. With several new collections out, and two more lined up for later this month, we’re revisiting the student-run business to update readers on the latest USC streetwear apparel must-haves.
A bit of background on Geistwear:
The name Geistwear combines the German word “zeitgeist,” meaning “spirit of the times,” with “streetwear,” an apt reflection of the business’ on-trend products. With a refreshing “built by and for college students” approach, the founders’ goal is to create college apparel that is both inclusive and actually in tune with what’s trending among students. For more about the company’s first few drops, read our previous feature.
In recent months, the brand has expanded beyond USC and continues to propel into colleges across the country. Not only have they expanded their reach, but their selection too--the company now offers masks, tote bags, and even bedding with Geistwear designs on them. With a long-term goal of not just meeting the trends, but creating them, Geistwear consistently experiments with different graphics and styles, taking inspiration from today’s most coveted streetwear brands.
Here are some of our current favorites:
“Katakana,” meaning “Fight On” in Japanese, is a design meant to embody the hypebeast Japanese streetwear culture and anime imagery. Designed by students, the bold design combines inverted color-play of the classic Tommy Trojan statue and creative text angles.
The collection offers the design on T-shirts, hoodies, crewnecks, and sweatpants, and is currently a permanent design on the Geistwear website.
Pattern Jumpsuit (Spring 2021 Exclusive)
Inspired by the Missguided x Playboy collab that took the loungewear industry by storm, Geistwear recently dropped its own eye-catching Pattern Jumpsuit collection. The piece displays the word “TROJAN” vertically and horizontally along with the classic Fight On emoji hand. The matching set allows students to rep SC while making a bold fashion statement. Geistwear playfully describes the set as “Built to withstand any class or late night studying session in Leavey Library.”
As opposed to the same old red and gold crewnecks, sweatpants, tops, etc., Geistwear’s products allow students to rep their school in a more creative, on-trend, and subtle way. Whether it’s a hoodie, hat, or top, their pieces are equally suitable for a casual coffee run as they are for a football game, bringing a new sense of versatility and individuality to game-day apparel.
Geistwear has two exciting collections in the works. One highlights the #StopAsianHate movement that has erupted in light of recent hateful attacks against Asian Americans across the country. Ronquillo-Morgan and Diogo are working diligently to create a fitting design for the collection, and are looking forward to sharing it with the public in the next few weeks.
The apparel company is also planning a DogeCoin inspired drop. Definitely keep an eye out for both via their website and socials.
